Why counter height?

Room 01 of 03 · Kitchen

Brief: Counter height, verticals straight.

The kitchen is the room where the countertop has to read as one clean line.

Why counter height?

We shoot kitchens with the camera at counter height and level. Same room, same morning light, two camera positions:

Illustration drawn by the game's renderer: the same kitchen, eye level, tilted down. How a phone sees a kitchen. The countertops tip toward you, the walls lean out at the top, and the edges stretch.

  1. 01

    Height

From counter height, about 36 to 42 inches off the floor, the countertop collapses into a single clean edge and the island stops blocking the room. From eye level you look down on every surface, and the room shrinks.

  2. 02

    Level

Tilt the camera a few degrees and every vertical leans: door frames, cabinet edges, the corners of the room. We keep the camera level and let the height do the framing.

  3. 03

    Lens

A very wide lens fits more in, but it stretches the edges and makes the room read bigger than it is, and the photograph no longer matches the walk-through. We use a lens that shows the room the way it feels to stand in it.
