Play · Decisive Moment

The decisive moment.

Photographers call it the decisive moment: the fraction of a second when the action peaks and the frame holds together. Here are six, from the kinds of jobs we photograph. Fire the shutter on each one.

  • ≤ 40 ms Decisive · 100
  • ≤ 90 ms Sharp · 60
  • ≤ 180 ms Soft · 25

Decisive Moment · 6 frames

Freeze the peak.

Each frame has one instant where everything lines up. Watch the lead-up, then fire the shutter on it.

On the day

Why the timing matters.

  1. 01

    It happens once.

The bouquet goes up once. The glasses meet once. A cap toss does not get a second take. The photograph is either there when it happens, or it is not.

  2. 02

    Anticipate, then press.

By the time you see the peak, it has passed. Read the lead-up instead: the wind-up before the throw, the crouch before the jump, the lean before the toast. Press a beat early.

  3. 03

    Tell us when it happens.

When you book, put the schedule in the request: the toasts, the toss, the first whistle. We confirm in writing what you’ll receive and when, and assign the photographer.
